Today was the momentous match day that marks every young doctor's career forever. I have to admit that I normally hate this kind of ceremonial stuff since I get kinda antsy in large crowds, but today was definitely very special. Seeing all of my classmates together again all smiling and in good spirits is not something i've seen since the first day of med school.
It was simply hard to describe... I remember one time I was at a sixers playoff game and the crowd was ridiculously wild with a deafening roar on every single basket the sixers scored. I got that same kinda feeling today as we all opened our envelopes and the electricity in the room spread everywhere with eruption of laughter and cheering from friends, faculty, and family. Ah, it was a beautiful moment...

It looks like i'm heading back to Philly for the next few years so it will be good to come back and see what's changed in my 10 year absence. Let's hope west Philly isn't the way I remember it back in the early to mid-90s.

You know you're a nerd when hints of a new Civilization game threatens the stability of your job and marriage. In fact, there is only one other game that has me this excited, but there can only be one. Oh the pangs...

While flipping around the the internet forums, one poster was talking about moving over to China for a few years to teach English, and it was there that someone posted a website that gave one Westerner's intepretation of the cultural differences between China and the Western world. One of the things that immediately jumped out at me was the story about "面" or "face" if literally translated. It's a concept supposedly difficult to describe or explain to Westerners, but I couldnt help noticing that 面 is more prevalent in Western society than people think and probably not quite as alien as the website suggests.

For example, in an old 90's movie called "Tiger on Beat" (or "老虎出差"
in Chinese), Chow Yun Fat stars in one of his more comical cop films where he suffers an embarassing incident involving a gun barrel pointed at his tonsils which causes him to lose consciousness+autonomic functioning and additionally much 面
such that he subsequently is often asked how "he can even look at the sun." It should be fairly obvious how this kind of example plays into 面 and how it was lost because most police officers would probably catch a good amount of grief from their peers in that situation.

The next example came from a recent reminder while working on my rank list. 4th year of med school is largely believed to be unlike the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in that scheduling is very flexible such that you can make it as hard or easy as you want it to be. Most strike a balance between the two by working hard at the beginning of 4th year in preparation for residency applications and then tapering off the intensity as the interview season and match process draw closer. While talking with classmates about the ROL, i've become acutely aware of the sensitive and/or secretive nature of each person's rank list which then reminded me of 面 and the many ways we all try to preserve it in the faces of our peers. When discussing the match, somehow you eventually get the implicit impression that it's common knowledge to not reveal where you want to go for residency because there's the chance you won't get to go where you want to be and would then lose 面 in front of all of your peers on match day. In reality though, I and a lot of my other classmates couldnt care less where people match as long as they're happy so why is there so much anxiety about discussing rank lists? 面? I'm sure there are more examples out there, but Saving Face has probably been something we just havent overtly talked about in a more individualistic American society.

So a fair amount of snow fell today and made it just worthwhile enough to go for a tumble. It's still falling so we'll what else we can think up when theres even more snow that continues to fall over night.

For pics that I took, please refer to my photo gallery. I'll update once I get a hold of Allison Lippert's originals that she took with a fine example of her handiwork above.

Mosquito_Toes
No matter where I go, they will find me and it was especially apparent in SE Asia where you could see mosquitoes dancing around on my clothing even during the day. Needless to say I went everywhere in jeans and my fleece even though it was 75 with high humidity. When mosquitoes find an opening on me, they stick their proboscis in me. My immune system doesnt like that and it flips out on the mosquito spit that slips into my bloodstream leading to a huge itchy wheal opening up where she had her way with me. I've found several ways to treat the mosquito bites, but i've always wanted to figure out what made me so much more appetizing than any of the thousands of other people that were around me at the same time, and now these people are starting to home in on what these little bastards are smelling on me. I hope better repellents come out of this because that other crap ain't working.
